Adjusting to the Economy
Wednesday, April 08, 2009
How has the economy had an impact on you as a couple (if any)?
What kinds of things have you done to adjust?

We have 3 kids and we tried to alternate our work schedules. We are using one car to go out and we are cooking more often instead of buying food. This is how we are dealing with the economy now

We do the same with food - though I (Lisa) love going out to dinner, we eat at home most all of the time now. We also have 3 kids, so not eating out saves a lot of money!

My wife and I get paid every other week, so we sit down every other friday night and make up a menu for the next 2 weeks. Then when we go shopping on saturday we buy just what we need to make the things on the menu. We have 2 young girls so of course there is some things that make it into the cart that are not on the menu. We also dropped all the movie channels off our dish plan and joined NetFlix, it is a lot cheaper.

We are an older couple and our kids are out of the house. We did go out to dinner every other night and now we are down to once a week on a Friday night. We review the food ads and buy only what is on sale which determines what our home cooked meal menu will be. My wife got here work start time moved up so that I can drop her off on my way to work and she only has to count on a taxi to get home.

We used to eat out almost every night. Unfortunately, that didn't quite help us with either the pocket book nor our waistlines. We've been on the Nutrisystem diet for the past 2 months, which has helped us save tons by simply eating in (and less). The results? We've both lost weight and feel (and look) much better, all while saving money. This has been quite a win-win!

Gary and I are a couple who just got engaged. We are trying to plan our wedding, buy a house and start our family but with the way the economy has changed its making everything 3 times harder. The only thing that we really have to look forward to at this point is our dinner dates every saturday night and spending the hour a night that we get with eachother until our scheduals get back on track.

John and I definately eat out less and use more coupons/sales. We also use Craigs List to buy toys/childrens items that are used. It has helped a lot. Our 2 kids are not old enough to know that the items are not new. I work the hours my husband is at home and he works at home a little bit more. Neither one of us open our retirement statements right now. It is too depression. We have also cut back on credit card spending.

Brad and I just bought our house in December. So we have been on a tight budget for the last year before getting into our house. It does make it difficult when I cook dinner and he "forgets" to bring his lunch with him about 3 or 4 days of the week ha ha. But we were smart about the loan we got and made sure that if one of us lost our jobs we could still afford all of our bills. So we make sure not to over spend where we're at but also a budget plan on the gas and electric helps substantially in planning our monthly budgets.

Howard and I used to go out every first of the month for breakfast- but not any more. We eat at home all the time. It saves gas and money on food- instead, we got a membership to a gym and its working out great- instead of sitting home watching TV all day which drove me nuts [we're retired and it gets BORING]

Troy and are about the same as all the rest of u. We go out to eat once a week and the rest of the week we cook at home. I stay at home alot to save on gas but toy has to drive to work. We were living in a beautiful 3 dedroom that actualy had a really nice back yard, now we are living in a three bedroom townhouse with no yard. Iuse to be able to get out in the yard and plant, or just mess around. Now theres no yard and nothing to mess with. I just hate it!!!!

Like a lot of you mentioned, we limit eating out or ordering in to one night a week. I always check the grocery store ads before shopping to see what is on sale. We rent movies and make popcorn rather than going out to the movies. When my husband's car was on its last leg, we purchased a smaller, more gas efficient vehicle. We turn out lights, blocked text messages on our phones, don't buy things we don't really need...lots of little things. This is our way of life till we get our son's student loans paid off.
